Benefits of Sauerkraut

I have been eating a lot of sauerkraut this summer.  I am not sure why I am craving so much sauerkraut, but health experts believe that as your body (and gut) heals itself…even your cravings become healthier.  This must be the case with me.  My “bad” (unhealthy) cravings have almost disappeared these last few weeks.  I have been limiting the amount of gluten I eat (almost none) and I can really see an improvement in my overall health~ physical, mental, and emotional.  The days I slip and eat a little gluten, my body has an immediate negative reaction.  My goal over the next few weeks and months is to be totally gluten free.  I am getting there~ one step at a time!

Back to the sauerkraut.  I have never really been a big fan of sauerkraut and now I am putting it on everything! (And no I am NOT pregnant~ just in case you were wondering :))  Nourishing Traditions has a great recipe on homemade sauerkraut and I have made it a few times.  I also love making it w/o the whey and adding only water, cabbage, and sea salt.  That is my favorite recipe so far.  Here is my favorite brand from the store.  3 simple ingredients.

The healthiest sauerkraut is made from home, but there are a few great options at the store.  Just make sure there are LIVE CULTURES in the kraut.  This brand that I buy has little bubbles at the bottom.  That is a good indicator of live cultures.  I love my good bacteria! Keeps me healthy and strong~ and feeling GREAT.

  1. I’ve been buying chicken hotdogs without nitrates (8 in a package) and eating it with them but I wolf it down right out of the jar too. It must mean I need help with digestion….very healthy…everything seems pretty normal, Thanks for responding so quickly!
