Stubborn cough going around…

My oldest son caught a nasty upper respiratory infection about 2 weeks ago.  It may have been bronchitis, whooping cough, or RSV.  It didn’t get TOO serious, but it was persistent and stubborn.  We managed pretty good at home with our arsenal of natural medicines and healthy diet.  Seems like many of these infections are circulating right now.  One of the great things about natural remedies…there are many options for upper respiratory infection treatment.  I have tried most of them and I have my favorites.

Now my 2 year old has it 😦 not great… why?  Because my 2 year old is very willful and he is stubborn about taking anything that tastes different.  Many natural remedies taste good and some not so GREAT!   Most of the natural cough syrups have honey added in and those are pretty easy to take.  But my stronger natural cough syrups really help with serious upper respiratory infections…. like Pekana Bronchi-Pertu.  I have to really dilute it and then syringe it to get my 2 year old to take it.  Forget any kind of compliance over here!

My favorites for Upper Respiratory Infections

Bronchi Pertu– cough syrup

Apo Pulm– cough syrup

Chestal Cough Syrup (Boiron)

Antimonium Tart (wet cough) 30 C

Droscera Rotundifola- principle remedy for whooping cough

Elderberry Syrup- antiviral

Gelsemium 30 C

Cod Liver Oil

Clean diet- limit sugar (which is difficult when the boys go to school). Lots of Homemade Chicken Broth, no DAIRY.

I will be completely honest…my strong natural cough syrups were on back order for a few days.  I had to use a few over the counter cough syrups for my 4 year old.  This was a first for me and I was a little hesitant, but he needed serious relief fast, especially at night.  We used Mucinex and it really helped him sleep and not cough violently at night.  My son was coughing up lots of phlegm during the day.  I felt really bad for him, but he got through it.  If I would have been able to get the Bronchi-Pertu faster, I would not have needed the Mucinex.  I know that sometimes I have to compromise, and I made the right choice in helping my son heal… even though it was not my first preference.

This infection is stubborn! Progress and real healing took a lot longer than I anticipated.  Now that my 2 year old has it I kind of know what to plan for.  I am using my natural remedies aggressively and trying to get him  to rest as much as possible…. which is NOT easy.  At night I am using a humidifier with a few drops of lavender and tea tree oil.  This is really helping him sleep without coughing fits.  The essential oils are amazing.  Love them! I am also giving him a little melatonin to help him have restful sleep.  Now it is just a waiting game.  It will probably take a few more days before he fully recovers.

I keep my boys home from school when they are sick and I wish other parents would too.  Sick children need to rest and really get better before going back to school, let’s keep exposure to a minimum! I know that is an unrealistic expectation for schools, but I can hope right?!?!?! 🙂

  2. Where do you find info for how to use essential oils? And where did you get your homeopathy stuff and then know how to use it?

    • I always do searches online for info on essential oils. You can find them everywhere. DoTerra Essential Oils have great resources on how to use them. I have a friend that sells them. Also, for homeopathy I use ABC homeopathy.com or my closest health food store. There are great little guides in the stores that help with usage. Good luck!
